Well last night's chili was OK - not hot enough for David, but fine for the rest of us. A thunderstorm hit the island last night. Beautiful to watch since there is a lot of sky. Most of the large trees were cut down for ship parts, leaving a very open view. The storm also cleared the humidity & haze - clear blue skies this morning, although a bit cool at 60 degrees. I took a couple of more pictures at & on the way to the farm.

Millbrook Road

The road photo shows what the sand roads often look like. This is Millbrook road, where my brother lives. Roads are a little strange on Nantucket. There are many paved roads, but many more miles of narrow sand roads. Most are owned & maintained by the abutters living on them, but used by everyone. Millbrook road is a short cut between two major paved roads & is fairly heavily used. In the past, my father collected money from the people living along the road to have it scraped when necessary. After he passed away no one collected & the road got pretty bad. There were potholes that were over 4' deep. It was a roller coaster ride getting to the house. It got so bad that the fire trucks couldn't make it from one end to the other. Now it is in much better shape.

We got the bad news that Don & Anne are not going to make it to Nantucket this summer. Anne was back in the emergency room yesterday, and, although she is home & feeling better, they need to stick to home for a couple of days. Don has to start work after that, so they can't fit a trip into their schedule. Better luck next year!

David is putting together a major feed for tonight. A big piece of smoked cow, potato salad, clams, and other stuff for us & some of his friends.

Gooey & Luann Are Watching the Brisket Smoking!

We took Luann down to a gallery to show her portfolio. While she was doing that I walked out on the dock to take some photos. On the way home we drove by the windmill & for the first time in years, we saw it spinning. Of course, as soon as I got my camera out ready to do a long exposure of the spinning blades, the wind died down. Well, I did get a photo of the operator trying to restart it.

Almost forgot the Sandcastle Competition! Judging for the 34th Annual Sandcastle and Sculpture Day was scheduled for 5:00; we went to the Jetties at 4:00 & they were giving out the last award? Anyway, we checked out the sandcastles as the tide started to wash them away:

Now it's home for dinner! Although the brisket looked a little dark, it was great. Lots of food & friends for dinner in the back yard.
