Another foggy morning in Nantucket. The fog was so thick I left the camera home for my walk this morning. After my walk we went to Sconset so Luann could collect some sand from the beach. She is going to collect a sample from as many beaches as she can get to. While there I took a photo of some Rose Hips. They are the seed pod of wild roses. Very sweet to nibble as long as you don't bite down to the seed area. Also filled with vitamin C.

After the beach it was time to walk around the homes at Sconset. Most have beautiful flowers, both in the ground & the many window boxes. When we were here in 2005 it was disappointing to find that the Merry-Go-Round horse was missing from the Chanticleer Restaurant. I photographed this many times & my mother sold many paintings (including two we own) of it. David told us that the owner retired & the restaurant closed. When I stopped by today it appeared open - the sign was back up, the courtyard filled with people, and menus on the entryway, but the horse is still gone.

We also did our traditional drive along Baxter Road to check out the Sankaty Lighthouse. On the way we passed a house (actually a couple of them) being moved closer to the road. The beach is eroding to the point where many of the houses are in danger of falling into the sea. In fact, many of the neighbors have invested millions of dollars in a beach nourishment project (the Siasconset Beach Preservation Fund) to bring sand in from the off-shore shoals & replenish the shoreline below their homes. There is opposition to the project from fisherman who feel the dredging will destroy fishing beds in the area. Most of the projects designed to save beaches have only provided temporary relief or, even worse, caused unexpected damage further down the beach. Still, most of the houses along Baxter road are large, expensive homes; it is difficult to watch them tumble into the ocean. A photo of the problem (not one of mine) is at Webshots. In any case, the house below is being moved.

We are still trying to stay flexible since we don't know who will be here for dinner so the plan is for chili. A short stop at the Stop & Shop for the ingredients (and it happened to be lunch time again & empty) then home. After a short break we decided to go to Bartletts Farm Market for salad stuff. As long as we were headed that way it was only a bit further to hit Cisco Beach for Luann's next sand collection. Some pretty heavy surf - Luann tried wading & got wet (Sorry, I was taking pictures of more Rose hips & didn't get her trying to drown herself!)

Bartlett's Farm has changed. Last time we were there you entered their greenhouses to shop. Now they have a whole building that is a complete store selling just about everything you can find at a full grocery store. The fruit & vegetables are less expensive than at Stop & Shop! After gathering the salad stuff (and, of course a bit more) we headed home & I started the Chili.

If you are wondering where all these places are, an on-line map is available at http://www.greatpointproperties.com/local-map.

Till later!
