Sunday, June 28, 2015, Bear Creek RV Park, Valdez, AK, 0 Miles Today, 4162.7 Miles for the Trip

Well, it hardly rained overnight, and the morning was clear enough that we could cook pancakes & bacon outdoors, but after that it was another day of light drizzle. We went to see the Valdez Glacier. Not every town can have its own glacier! You can't easily access the base of the glacier unless you do it by boat. When we arrived at the park there was a group of kayakers getting lessons before paddling to the glacier. There was an interesting rock quarry at the mountain next to the pond at the park. They built a "road" (and I use that term loosely) and drove a large power shovel up to the top. There is a blasting drill there as well, so I assume they blast the rock, then backhoe it over the side of the cliff to make a pile of rock below. If you look carefully, you can see the rain of rock the shovel just dropped.

After that we headed back up Richardson Highway (AK 4) to the Worthington Glacier State Park. We took some photos of Worthington Glacier from the road yesterday, but wanted to get closer. There is a short hike from the parking lot to a viewing platform, and a longer one across the glacier gravel to the base of the glacier. I took a bunch of photos.

After that it was back to Valdez & Safeway to buy some rolls for tonight's hamburgers. 20 minutes later with a full shopping cart we left...

Dinner will be hamburgers, macaroni & cheese, and cheesecake for dessert.

Until next time -
