Sunday, December 20, 2015, La Posa West LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ, Day 32, 0 Miles, 4,046.3 Miles for the Trip

I decided to check out the Kofa National Wildlife Reserve after breakfast & my usual forum reading. The Palm Canyon road is about 18 miles south of Quartzsite. A fairly good dirt road (a bit wash-boarded, and you do have to keep an eye out for large stones in the road) about 6 miles in from US 95. Not a bad hike to the viewing area for the palms, although much of it is up a rocky wash & you do gain some altitude.

The palms are in side canyons to the left of the trail. I met three ladies who are staying in La Posa South at the end of the trail. We talked a bit, then I headed back to the RAV4.

On the way back to La Posa West, I stopped at another section of the Refuge, Crystal Hill. Another 6 mile long drive on a dirt road in worse shape than Palm Canyon Road, but as long as you stay within the speed limit of 25MPH, it is certainly do able in any vehicle. In the mineral collecting area you are allowed to collect 10 specimens or 10 pounds of quartz. The description in the Crystal Hill Area handout describes crystals of quartz, however all I found was white chunks of rock, no multi sided crystals. By the way, camping is allowed in both areas - 14 days & some restrictions on where. I did see quite a few RVs, including a Casita 16.

After that it was back to the campground & a bit or reading. Dinner will be a grilled chicken thigh, rice & snap peas.

Until Tomorrow -
